As I was sitting on my couch watching TV a commercial for Domino's Pizza came on. The commercial is called The Man Behind the Chicken.

Being hungry and a sucker for chicken wings I decided I was going to get some.  The only problem, I didn't know where the Domino's in my town was. Good thing I have the Internet. When I went to Domino's site, I clicked on the deal I had seen on TV. A 2 topping medium pizza and 8 chicken wings for $5.99 each. The first thing that came up was an online ordering system.  I was able to complete my whole order online with very little effort. After placing the order they provided a tracking page that allows me to see how far along my order was.  Talk about speeding up the ordering and pickup process.  For a guy who spends a lot of time online, this is a genius idea and it makes me wonder why everyone else isn't doing it.

I ordered my favorite pizza, Pineapple and Pepperoni and I got it on their garlic-seasoned crust, and 8 of their Sweet Mango Habanero wings. They actually offer 4 different flavors:  Hot, Sweet Mango Habanero, BBQ and Plain. They also came with one free dipping sauce (Kicker Hot Sauce, Sweet Mango Habanero, BBQ, and Ranch), which I applaud  because it seems like more and more establishments are starting to charge for the little things like dipping sauce. See: Wing Coop, Little Caesars.

I will be honest, my expectations for the wings were pretty low. I haven't had wings from a franchise pizza joint that I have really liked. To my surprise the wings were actually pretty good.  The sauce was thick and in abundance. The wings were nether too sweet, or too hot, but were balanced very well. There was just enough heat to get my nose running after a few wings, but not enough to cause my mouth to be on fire.  The ranch dressing dipping sauce had a nice zip to it that complimented the wings very nicely.
The pizza was by far the best Domino's pizza I have had to date, which tells me they really are trying to make their pizza better.  The sauce was good, the pepperonis were yummy, and the pineapple was slightly roasted (from baking) and sweet.  My only real complaint was that I think there was too much sauce which gave it a slight soggy texture.  My biggest surprise though was the crust.  I LOVED the crust.  I literally was looking forward to eating the crust.  Usually the crust is an afterthought and most of the times it is never eaten.  The crust was light and airy, with a nice hint of garlic and creamy butter.  I would buy a pizza with no toppings just to have the crust.  It think  they call those bread sticks.   The next time I order I will have to get some bread sticks to see if they are the same.

I guess it just goes to show that the power of advertising really does work.  If it wasn't for me not eating dinner until really late and a Domino's commercial showing great tasting food, I may never had tried Domino's Pizza, and I would have been missing out on one of the easiest ordering experiences of my life, not to mention probably the best pizza crust I have had.

It wasn't a Philly but it was still a pretty tasty steak sandwich.

Today we ended up at La Jolla Groves for lunch. It wasn't a place that I would have normally picked for lunch, but I heard they had a cheese steak so I decided to go.

Before I get into the actual review of La Jolla Groves I want to rant for a second and point out that I truly dislike having to go to the Riverwoods for anything. The parking is atrocious, and getting in and out of the place is horrendous. Now with that aside I can talk about my experience at La Jolla Groves.  The first thing of note about the restaurant is that they don't have a sign, so finding it was more challenging than it should have been.  I would have missed it altogether had it not been for the small wooden sign out in front of their bakery shop, even then I had to walk around to find the actual door to the restaurant.

Once I was inside I was seated under a fragrant canopy of leaves and lemons, giving the illusion of being in a grove of lemon trees.  At first I found this to be a bit corny, but by the end of the meal I was starting to like the natural feel the place had to it.

Our waiter was quick to take our order when we were ready, and a basket of fresh rolls were promptly brought to us while we waited for our food. We were given a variety of flavors for the rolls, I would say they were: white, honey wheat, sun roasted tomato and perhaps a pesto flavor roll.  I was able to try all four and I enjoyed them all, each had their own unique taste which brought a broad palate of flavor with them.

My cheese steak turned out to be just a steak sandwich but I was already here so I ordered it anyway.  The steak sandwich had a good portion of thick chunks of grilled steak tenderloin, which were very tender, and lightly marinated. I would have preferred to have had a stronger marinated flavor. The steak was covered in cheese, and topped with garden vegetables and grilled onions. Overall I really enjoyed the flavors of the sandwich, oh and did I mention that my steak was very tender? You can go a long way with just a properly cooked steak.  Even though it wasn't a Philly Cheese Steak, it was a very good steak sandwich, which was complimented by a nice sized salad topped with tomatoes, cucumbers, croutons and a vinaigrette dressing.

My service was exceptional. One of my number one criteria for feeling like I had good service is if I ever had to reach for an empty glass of water.  When I am eating it seems I go through at least 3 or 4 glasses of water a meal, and when my glass is empty I stop eating and get very agitated. For some reason I have to have water with my meal, or else I find it very difficult to eat.  This is probably just me, but it is the main reason why I put it number one on my list.  At La Jolla Groves, I never once reached for an empty glass of water. It has been a very long time since this last occurred.  Besides the water, our waiter was helpful, our food came out in a timely manner (it was pretty busy the day we ate there so that is impressive), my only ding towards the service was that when it was time to pay our bill our waiter seemed to have disappeared, and our bill had to be brought by another server.

Overall my experience with La Jolla Groves was a positive one. The atmosphere was pleasant, the service was exceptional, and my food was good.  My only negative on the day would have been the price. When I go to lunch I expect to pay around $7 bucks for a meal, so being over $10 dollars it exceeds what I consider an average priced lunch meal. They could do with lunch specials that would bring that price into the $7 dollar range.  Now if I were to go there for dinner, the price would be on the low side for what I would expect to pay for dinner at a sit down restaurant. So take it as you will.

Chubby's Cafe - Satisfied my craving for a Reuben sandwich

To contact us Click HERE
I have been craving a Reuben sandwich for who knows how long, and Chubby's Cafe's Reuben hit the spot. It was spot on good.

Price of Meal:

Reuben Sandwich & fry $6.99
8 Buffalo Wings + Jumbalia $7.49

Critique:

It was back to Chubbys for lunch today, but this time it was for a Reuben sandwich that I have been craving since the last time we ate there. I normally don't review things others other Wings and Phillys so I decided to get an order of wings as well just so I could review them.

The Reuben was what I would consider a true Reuben sandwich. Corned hash piled high with sauerkaout and a Russian dressing all between two pieces of grilled spiral rye bread. One word for you Yummy!  OK so the sandwich hit the spot and it didn't disappoint my craving, which sometimes puts more pressure on the food because now I have talked it up so much in my head that even the smallest imperfections can ruin it.  As a word to the wise, when eating this sandwich make sure you eat it first (I usually eat my fries first before they go cold) but in this case I waited too long to finish the 2nd half of my sandwich and the bread became soggy from the sauerkraut.

I didn't go with the beer battered fries this time like I did last time, and just went with the standard order of fries, which were pretty good. By this time I was getting pretty full and I hadn't even gotten to my wings.  I ordered their spicy wings, which were your traditional Louisiana style wings (my favorite, gold star to them) and they were described as being hot.  Usually most places definition of hot is not my definition, but in this case I felt they really were actually hot.  They had some kick to them, sure they didn't make my eyes water or my make my mouth run for a drink, but they were just hot enough as to not distract from the flavor.  Over all I was pretty impressed with the chicken wings. The sauce was think, the dipping sauces were free, the chicken was well cooked, but not overdone.  They are not the best wings I have had, but they are certainly worth ordering again.

Charley's Grilled Subs

To contact us Click HERE
The lunch crew headed to the mall today to find something to eat at the food court. I had actually brought a lunch with me to work and was intending to only come along for the ride. I was surprised to see the number of name brand fast food joints in the food court (I hadn't been there in years.) One place that stood out for me was Charley's Grilled Subs. There is something about a grilled steak sub that just speaks to me so I ended up deciding to give them a try.

Location:
575 University Pkwy
Orem, UT 84097

Price of Meal:
Steak & Fries $5.00
Fry Sauce $0.25
Steak upgrade $0.20
Total cost of meal + tax = $5.88

Critique:
I think I have a preconceived notion about mall food court food, that all food purchased at a food court will be more expensive with smaller portions. In the case of Charley's Grilled Subs I would say that the price was actually pretty good, but the portions were smaller.

Charley's Grilled Subs has a Steak & Fry deal for $5 bucks. Not a bad deal at all. I upgraded my sandwich from the standard sandwich of steak, grilled onions, and provolone to the deluxe which came with steak, grilled onions, green peppers, mushrooms, and provolone. So basically upgrading added mushrooms and green peppers, for only $0.20 cents (That's a good deal in my opinion). Once again I had to pay for fry sauce ($0.25.) I could rant about having to pay for fry sauce but I honestly think this is becoming the standard now, so instead I will praise those who still offer it for free.

My food came out in a timely manner. The first thing I noticed was that the meat was not overflowing the bun, but rather nicely fitting within its bread home. I thought the sandwich was dry and needed more moisture, usually in the form of grease (I have a hard time with dry sandwiches.) I think there is something to be said about a sloppy sandwich, they just seem to be more appealing to me. If I have to pull out my fork to finish off the sandwich that is a great sign.  Overall I wasn't that impressed with the sandwich, the dryness killed me.  I guess I could say it was right on par with what I would expect from a mall food court or fast food  Just remember you don't go to the mall to get food, you go to buy overpriced merchandise and when I was younger to pick up on girls. Would I ever go back to Charley's Grilled Subs to eat, maybe if I was in the mall already and needed to eat, but I doubt I will head there just for the food.

Arby''s Best Philly next to Philly?

I like the commercials Arby's is running for these new sandwiches. The spokes person is trying to explain to the people of Phillidelphia that he was saying that Arbys sandwich was the best Philly right after the original philly. You can see the comercial here. Arby's Misunderstanding.

Well Arby's is Aryb's. I have always enjoyed eating at Arby's.  People say that if you work at a place you won't be able to eat there after you quit, but I worked at Arbys as a teenager and still love it today.  So you might ask "Why review a fastfood chain" well because of the above mentioned commericial. That their Philly Cheese Steak is the "best Philly sandwich outside of Philadelphia"

I am going to have to say I don't agree with him at all. Although it had a lot of taste I just don't think thin sliced roast beef works that well for me in a philly cheese steak.  When I eat a cheesesteak I need chunks of meat dripping with greese and smothered in hot melted cheese. What I got at Arbys was thin sliced meat with swiss cheese.  Don't get me wrong, the sandwich was actually pretty good.  The meat was flavored well with seasons and pepper (I love me the pepper) mixed with grilled onion and peppers.  Perhaps they went a little over board with the name. I wouldn't call this a true Philly, but I would call it more of a cheesesteak.  Overall for five bucks I won't complain (much). If I wanted a good sandwhich while on the go, this is the one I will pick.

Canning Tomato Sauce

To contact us Click HERE

Wash, remove stems, and trim off bruised or discolored portions. To prevent juice from separating, quickly cut about 1 pound of fruit into quarters and put directly into saucepan. Heat immediately to boiling while crushing with a potato masher.

Continue to slowly add and crush freshly cut tomato quarters to the boiling mixture. Make sure the mixture boils constantly and vigorously while you add the remaining tomatoes. Simmer 5 minutes after you add all pieces. If you are not concerned about juice separation, simply slice or quarter tomatoes into a large saucepan. Crush, heat, and simmer for 5 minutes before juicing.

Press heated crushed tomatoes through a sieve or food mill to remove skins and seeds. Simmer tomato juice in large-diameter saucepan until sauce reaches desired consistency. Boil until volume is reduced by about one-third for thin sauce, or by one-half for thick sauce.

Add bottled lemon juice and salt to hot jars. Fill jars with hot tomato sauce, leaving ¼-inch head space.

Adjust lids and process the correct time for your altitude (I process my pint jars for 45 minutes and quart jars for 50 minutes).

Add to pint size hot canning jars:
1 TBSP lemon juice (to achieve proper acidity levels for safe canning)
½ tsp. salt (optional)

Add to quart size hot canning jars:
2 TBSP lemon juice (to achieve proper acidity levels for safe canning)
1 tsp. salt (optional)

*****
I like to can my tomato sauce plain without additional seasonings so I can add the seasonings depending on what I'm using it for. Guidelines are from the National Center for Home Preservation .

Chore Chart

Chore Charts

We started using a new chore chart called Accountable Kids for our daughter this summer and we have loved it! She has chores that are her responsibility to do throughout the day along with a few chores that we are willing to pay her to complete. Now that we have this chore chart set up, she runs to the chart to see what she needs to do next and is SO excited to turn over each card. Before it was a battle to get her hair done and for her to eat her vitamins. But now she dances to the kitchen announcing it is now time for vitamins! She loves this system and it helps her feel so grown up.

My favorite thing about the chore chart is I can simply say, it’s time to check your chore chart and she follows through on the next series of tasks. I don’t have to remind her over and over again to make her bed and clean up her room. She works through each set and lets me know when she is finished. Overall I highly recommend this set up. It’s really easy to use and my daughter loves it. I looked into several systems and finally settled on this one. On a scale of 1 to 5, I’d rate it a 5 for being so easy to use and instilling accountability and independence.

Once she is finished with a set of chores (color coded for different times of the day), she earns a ticket. She can turn in a ticket for different activities. We chose activities that we wanted to keep limited and ones we thought she felt entitled to instead of grateful for them. It has really helped her feel so grateful to watch tv or play a computer game. We also stopped doing time outs and will simply ask for a ticket when there is negative behavior.

Before we did time outs and I felt they made the situation worse instead of better. She would completely fall apart and scream in the laundry room instead of having time to calm down and collect herself. By taking away a ticket, she has to walk away from the situation to get a ticket and this gives her time to collect herself and break the negative behavior. I’m thrilled how well this has worked.

Because she is only 4 years old we are holding off on implementing the rest of this accountability chart. We will wait a few months to add in the privilege passes which work on correcting negative behavior and best behavior cards which reinforce positive behavior. I absolutely love these concepts but want to make sure I slowly implement each level of the chart. The chart also has a system where the child can work towards special dates with mom or dad by completing all chore for 10 days.

At 4 years old here is a breakdown of how we have her chart set up. These will change as she gets older but the kit as 50 chore cards so it will be easy to implement new chores as she gets older:

Morning cards (yellow)
Make bed
Brush teeth
Say family prayers

Midmorning cards (red)
Shower
Get dressed
Comb hair
Eat vitamins (I put these on the counter for her in the morning)
Clean up toys (whatever mess was made that morning)

Afternoon cards (blue)
Clean up toys (whatever mess was made that afternoon)

Evening cards (purple)
Put on pajamas
Clean up bedroom
Lay out clothes for the next day
Pick out a book to read for bedtime routine
Brush teeth

With the chance of earning 4 tickets in a day, she can use these tickets for the following:

Watch 30 minutes of tv or a movie
Play computer games
Play a game on my phone
Pick out movies at the library (we always pick out books and music each week, but if she wants to pick out movies a ticket is needed)
Paint fingernails
Paint toenails
Stay up 5 minutes past bedtime
We also let her turn in unused tickets at the end of the week to spin for a little prize (items we would have normally purchased such as craft supplies, new socks or stickers).

Tasks she can chose to do each week to earn money:
Dust
Help clean bathrooms
Sweep the kitchen with a small dustpan and broom
Help sort laundry or help put laundry away
