Charley's Grilled Subs

To contact us Click HERE
The lunch crew headed to the mall today to find something to eat at the food court. I had actually brought a lunch with me to work and was intending to only come along for the ride. I was surprised to see the number of name brand fast food joints in the food court (I hadn't been there in years.) One place that stood out for me was Charley's Grilled Subs. There is something about a grilled steak sub that just speaks to me so I ended up deciding to give them a try.

Price of Meal:
Steak & Fries $5.00
Fry Sauce $0.25
Steak upgrade $0.20
Total cost of meal + tax = $5.88

Critique:
I think I have a preconceived notion about mall food court food, that all food purchased at a food court will be more expensive with smaller portions. In the case of Charley's Grilled Subs I would say that the price was actually pretty good, but the portions were smaller.

Charley's Grilled Subs has a Steak & Fry deal for $5 bucks. Not a bad deal at all. I upgraded my sandwich from the standard sandwich of steak, grilled onions, and provolone to the deluxe which came with steak, grilled onions, green peppers, mushrooms, and provolone. So basically upgrading added mushrooms and green peppers, for only $0.20 cents (That's a good deal in my opinion). Once again I had to pay for fry sauce ($0.25.) I could rant about having to pay for fry sauce but I honestly think this is becoming the standard now, so instead I will praise those who still offer it for free.

My food came out in a timely manner. The first thing I noticed was that the meat was not overflowing the bun, but rather nicely fitting within its bread home. I thought the sandwich was dry and needed more moisture, usually in the form of grease (I have a hard time with dry sandwiches.) I think there is something to be said about a sloppy sandwich, they just seem to be more appealing to me. If I have to pull out my fork to finish off the sandwich that is a great sign.  Overall I wasn't that impressed with the sandwich, the dryness killed me.  I guess I could say it was right on par with what I would expect from a mall food court or fast food  Just remember you don't go to the mall to get food, you go to buy overpriced merchandise and when I was younger to pick up on girls. Would I ever go back to Charley's Grilled Subs to eat, maybe if I was in the mall already and needed to eat, but I doubt I will head there just for the food.

Arby''s Best Philly next to Philly?

I like the commercials Arby's is running for these new sandwiches. The spokes person is trying to explain to the people of Phillidelphia that he was saying that Arbys sandwich was the best Philly right after the original philly. You can see the comercial here. Arby's Misunderstanding.

Critique:
Well Arby's is Aryb's. I have always enjoyed eating at Arby's.  People say that if you work at a place you won't be able to eat there after you quit, but I worked at Arbys as a teenager and still love it today.  So you might ask "Why review a fastfood chain" well because of the above mentioned commericial. That their Philly Cheese Steak is the "best Philly sandwich outside of Philadelphia"

I am going to have to say I don't agree with him at all. Although it had a lot of taste I just don't think thin sliced roast beef works that well for me in a philly cheese steak.  When I eat a cheesesteak I need chunks of meat dripping with greese and smothered in hot melted cheese. What I got at Arbys was thin sliced meat with swiss cheese.  Don't get me wrong, the sandwich was actually pretty good.  The meat was flavored well with seasons and pepper (I love me the pepper) mixed with grilled onion and peppers.  Perhaps they went a little over board with the name. I wouldn't call this a true Philly, but I would call it more of a cheesesteak.  Overall for five bucks I won't complain (much). If I wanted a good sandwhich while on the go, this is the one I will pick.

Bring a large stock pot of water to a low boil.  Wash, scrub, then peel potatoes.  Quarter potatoes, then blanch in the waterfor 10 minutes (we are only heating them through, not cooking them at thispoint).  Strain potatoes from the water, then submerge them in cold water and allow to cool.  Grate potatoes with a cheese grater or a foodprocessor with the grater attachment. Place shredded potatoes directly into proportion size containers to freeze or freezeon cookie sheets, then transfer to gallon size freezer bags.
To cook, thaw frozen potatoes in the fridge.  Over medium high heat, melt 1-2 TBSP coconutoil,  add shredded potatoes and allow tofully cook on one side before flipping.  Seasonwith salt and pepper.  Once brown andcrispy, turn and allow to fully cook on the other side.
*****We love having these stocked in the freezer.  It makes a quick meal when you add sausage, tomatoes and bell peppers to the mix.

Packaging Treats

As we frequently pack our own treats, snacks and meals whileon the go, we’ve found a few items to help make packing these items a littleeasier.
2 oz. cups with tight fitting lids are the perfect size forpacking ketchup, dip for vegetables, maple syrup, or a small proportion of nuts, dried fruits or trail mix.  For mydaughters preschool Christmas party, we used these containers to pack frosting, decorations for the sugar cookies and chocolates to share with her class.  We buy them in bulk at a local restaurantsupply store but it looks like you can order a similar product through Amazon.
Using a 9 oz. plastic cup wrapped in cellophane is a reallyeasy way to package cupcakes.  With mydaughters food allergies, it’s common for me to send a safe cupcake with her toa party or get together.  This packagingmakes it easy to get the cupcake there without being squished.  For additional instructions, please see theblog Bird On a Cake.

Easy Grape Juice

Choose ripe, tight-skinned, preferably green seedless grapesor purple concord grapes once they reach optimum eating quality (you can tell by tasting them, if they are very sweet they are ready.  You can also tell if they are ready to pick if the seed inside has turned a darker color.  Once the seed is dark and the grapes taste very sweet, they are ready to harvest).  Stem, wash, and drain grapes.
Fill jars with 1 ½ cups of grapes, ¼ cup sugar and fill therest of the jar with boiling water, leaving 1-inch headspace. Have lids simmering in hot water.  Add lids, tighten rims, andprocess according to the recommendations in Table 1.  With where I live, I process my quart jarsfor 30 minutes.

*****
If you don't have a juice steamer, this is such an easy way to bottle grape juice.  The final juice isn't as flavorful as juicing the grapes, but they taste wonderful and it's really easy.  Guidelines are from the National Center For Food Preservation.  Our grapes are ready to harvest at different times depending on the weather that year.  They are generally ready 1-2 weeks after our Lemon Elberta Peach tree.  It has been as early as the end of August and as late as the end of September.
